I was following along with Alex Howard's great coverage on Twitter of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security meeting "Transforming Government Through Innovative Tools and Technology" on Tuesday, August 3, 2010. I was most interested in the testimony of Riley Crane of Media Laboratory Human Dynamics Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During his testimony he actually calls out the idea of Tim O'Reilly as "government as a platform" and Gov 2.0 principles. The video below begins at the beginning of the portion of the meeting containing his testimony. The prepared text of the testimony is below the video.

Medicare Savings Report
The new report on Medicare savings claims that the passage of the Affordable Care Act will save about $8 billion by the end of 2011, $575 billion over the rest of the ten years, and add 12 years of solvency to the program. The report is below:

Cookies - Delicious or Nasty?
Are internet cookies a good thing?
A cookie is a little bit of text stored by a user's web browser. Cookies can be used for authentication, the identifier for a server session, storing site preferences, shopping cart contents, or just about anything else that can be done with text data. A cookie is made up of one or more name-value pairs containing bits of information. The cookie is sent as an HTTP header by a web server to a web browser and then sent back unchanged by the browser each time it accesses that server.
Although cookies can provide a useful function, some may not be so desirable. As the Internet evolved from its beginnings in government and academia to more commercial purposes, cookies are also used as tracking mechanism used by advertisers. The Wall Street Journal has published a new report The Web's New Gold Mine: Your Secrets. Anyone interested in online privacy will find this very interesting. Below is a video which is part of this report:
