Timeline: The Selling of the Cellphone

The New York Times has this amazing interactive graphic that shows the timeline of ads marketing cellphones to drivers, and studies showing their risks. The accompanying article reports studies which show that a driver talking on a cellphone is four times likelier to crash but that using a hands-free device does not eliminate the risk.

There are possibly even great distractions ahead... Ford announced technologies at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show that will allow in-car access to the Internet, with new automotive interiors built from scratch with that ability in mind. Features like 10-inch screens above the gearshift showing high-definition videos, 3-D maps and Web pages will drive safety advocates to distraction.
